Kathakali

A dance-drama, highly stylized, of the state of Kerala. It originated from the precursor drama called 'Ramanattam' and owes its share of techniques of 'Krishnanattam' also.The costumes and make ups are very attractive.The body movements are complementary to the percussion music. Late Mahakavi Valllathole Narayana Menon was a great patron of this dance-drama.

Kathakali has recently gained reputation in foreign countries also.

Temples in Chennai

1. Ashtalakshmi Temple

The deity of this temple is eight forms of 'Lakshmi', the goddess of properity. It is located on the "Elliot's beach in Besant nagar, Chennai. The temple has rich Drawidian architecture. This temple has unique architecture than any other 'Murugan Temples in Chennai. The deity is unusually placed facing north.It is about 28 kms. from the Chennai city.

4. Mangadu Kamakshi Temple

Mangadu means mangrove.The goddess is kamakshi, a form of Parvathy.The image of the deity is really eye-catching.

5. Vadapalany Dandayudhapani Temple

The teple is typical example thatdevelopment has never tarnished the cultural and traditionalheritage of Chennai people.

6. Thyagaraja Temple.

One of the oldest temples of Chennai. It is constucted a millenium ago.
